Overview

The Processing Foundation is a non-profit organization founded in 2014, a 501(c)(3) public charity, that supports the development and dissemination of software tools to facilitate programming education and creative coding, supported by a vibrant ecosystem of contributors, users, educators, and enthusiasts. The Foundation grew from the Processing project, which started in 2001. In 2021, the Foundation received unprecedented support from its community, marking the beginning of an exciting new chapter for the organization.

They are looking for a leader who will help them envision the next chapter of the organization as they imagine new levels of support for their core software projects (p5.js and Processing Java) and public programming, including their annual fellowship program.

The Executive Director will shape their strategic vision, lead financial management and fundraising initiatives, and represent our community. They are supported by four staff, including the Senior Director of Outreach and Partnerships, Program Manager, Finance Manager, and the Program and Communications Coordinator, as well as three project leads for Processing, p5.js, and the p5.js web editor.

Position The Processing Foundation seeks a visionary Executive Director with a deep commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, access, varied technical acumen and interests, and demonstrated resilience. The ideal candidate will have a deep passion for open-source software and education and a keen ability to lead through change and innovate within the intersecting realms of technology and the arts.

Location and Starting Date
This is a fully remote position. Applicants can be based anywhere in the United States, but the team is in New York, Berlin, and Los Angeles. Applicant needs to be authorized to work in the United States. The new Executive Director is expected to start on July 1, 2024.

Salary & Benefits
The Processing Foundation offers a competitive salary and benefits package, including a base salary estimated to be between $110,000 and $125,000, medical and dental insurance, and paid time off.

Required

Technical Competency: Interest or background in technology, particularly open-source software relevant to the arts and education. Familiarity with the Foundation’s core projects, such as p5.js and Processing Java.

Resilience and Adaptability: Proven ability to navigate uncertainties, with a track record of leading organizations through periods of change and growth.

Leadership Experience: Experience in managing a small to medium-sized team, including remote workers. Ability to oversee daily operations, staff development, and program management.

Preferred
Community Support: skills in building and nurturing relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders, including artists, educators, developers, donors, and partners. Commitment to fostering an inclusive and vibrant community.

Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to serve as the primary spokesperson for the Foundation. Skill in communicating complex technical and educational concepts to a broad audience.

Global Perspective: Understanding global challenges and opportunities in the intersection of arts and technology. Ability to engage with and support an international community.

Responsibilities

Strategic Vision and Financial Sustainability:
Lead strategic planning and innovation in alignment with the mission, adapting to the evolving fields of technology, arts, and education.
Drive fundraising efforts and manage financial operations to ensure the Foundation’s long-term sustainability and fiscal accountability.

Community Engagement and Inclusive Advocacy:
Foster relationships within a diverse community, promoting an inclusive culture and encouraging collaboration and open-source advocacy.
Act as the primary spokesperson to elevate the Foundation’s profile, engaging with external partners and advocating for their mission, values, and projects.

Program Management and Organizational Excellence:
Ensure impactful execution and continuous quality improvement of the Foundation’s programs, focusing on software development, education, and community outreach.
Oversee organizational operations, staff development, and foster a productive work culture, ensuring efficiency and collaboration.

Leadership in Diversity and Strategic Collaboration:
Champion diversity, equity, inclusion, and access, integrating these principles across all Foundation activities and engaging underrepresented communities.
Work closely with the Board of Directors and external stakeholders for strategic guidance and support, enhancing the Foundation’s influence and ensuring alignment with its values.
