GRANTS OF $5,000 FOR VISUAL ARTISTS OFFERED BY LIU SHIMING ART FOUNDATION 
Applications open to early career visual artists worldwide

The Liu Shiming Art Foundation is now accepting applications for a new round of Liu Shiming Artist Grants designed to support the work of visual artists during the first decade of their careers. Up to five grants of $5,000 each will support the creation or completion of new projects. 

“In keeping with the creative practice of Liu Shiming, this round of Artist Grants will focus on projects that explore the interplay between traditional cultural or historical influence and contemporary artistic practice,” explains Fran Kaufman, Curatorial Director of Liu Shiming Art Gallery. Kaufman will head up the international selection panel of distinguished professionals representing a cross-section of the art world to review top applications. 

Visual artists who have been working for at least two years (but not more than 10 years) are invited to apply for a grant via the Foundation’s website. Applications must be submitted by August 31, 2024; there is no application fee.

1. Who can apply?

  • Early career or professional artists of all-ages, with no restriction on place of residence or work (To be eligible for consideration, applicants must have either received a degree in studio arts between 2014 and 2022, or had their debut show at a gallery or juried art exhibition between 2014 and 2022).
  • Individuals or artist collectives.

Note: Students currently enrolled in universities partnered with the Liu Shiming Art Foundation are not eligible to apply. See the list of partnered universities on the foundation’s website for details.

2. What opportunities do the Foundation offer to the selected artists?
Selected artists will participate in Liu Shiming Art Foundation’s future international programs and exhibition spaces to reach a wider audience. These projects may include but are not limited to participation in the following activities:

  • $5,000 grant to support the creation or completion of new projects.
  • Potential residency in China (details TBD).
  • Potential future exhibition opportunities at the Liu Shiming Art Gallery in Manhattan, New York (details TBD).
  • Access to the Liu Shiming Scholars and Artists network.

3. Do I have to pay for my application?
No, the application for the Liu Shiming Art Grants is free.

4. What do I need to submit with my application?
The application should be submitted via the foundation’s website and must include the following files:

  • Resume: Including full name, age, nationality, educational background, email address, social media account (optional), gallery representation, recent activities, and awards (if any).
  • E-portfolio or website link: Portfolio should be submitted in PDF format.
  • Artist Statement (within 500 words): A concise statement providing an overview of your artistic practice, discussing your ideas, themes, methods, and any relevant inspirations for your project.
  • Project Description (within 500 words): Including a specific timeline of planned steps, a description of the chosen area of study and research issue, an explanation of long-range career goals and how this grant will advance your career, up to 10 digital images and/or two videos (up to 2 minutes each) as supportive materials, and a detailed budget plan with cost descriptions for each item.

5. Who are the judges?
The Liu Shiming Art Foundation Council, led by Fran Kaufman, Curatorial Director of the Liu Shiming Art Gallery, along with an international selection panel of distinguished professionals representing a cross-section of the art world.

6. What are the judging criteria?
Applicants will be evaluated based on several attributes, including but not limited to:

  • Professional artistic background.
  • Purpose of entry.
  • Project’s connection to the legacy or cultural themes of this year’s Grants program.
  • Originality and uniqueness of the applicant’s artistic practice.

7. When will the results be announced?
The results will be announced on December 2, 2024.

8. When should I finish my project?
The selected artist will receive a contract sheet from the Foundation. The time needed for the project will be discussed and agreed upon with the selected artist.

Liu Shiming Art Gallery, a commercial gallery located in mid-town Manhattan, is dedicated to presenting the work of sculptor Liu Shiming through solo exhibitions of thematic bodies of work as well as presenting his work in context with other artists working in the same and related traditions.
